Authoring team

These are benign tumours that arise from the Schwann cells that support peripheral nerves.

Presentation is with firm, nodular lesions that are tethered to a nerve; pressure on the lump will result in pain in the area of distribution of the nerve.

Treatment is by careful excision with care taken to preserve the nerve, which may require microsurgical techniques.

There is an association with type 2 neurofibromatosis.
