The principle secondary deformity is the lateral displacement of the other toes.

A valgus hallux come to rest in a transverse orientation with the other toes resting on top or underneath. The first metatarsophalangeal joint may dislocate.

Surgical correction of secondary deformities is possible, but a surgical shoe may be preferable in an elderly patient.
