A rhinophyma is an extreme form of sebaceous gland hyperplasia concentrated on the nose and nearby skin creases. The nose becomes large and lumpy, and at times, grotesquely disfiguring.
It is relatively common, affecting men more often than women, and is usually seen in older age groups and in patients with a high alcohol intake. It may complicate rosacea.
It is treated surgically with excision of excessive soft tissues. Long term systemic antibiotics such as tetracycline are given to reduce occurrence.
