Maternal SLE may cause:

  • recurrent abortions
  • congenital heart block, and an association with an increased incidence of structural cardiac defects. In some instances the development of neonatal congenital heart block is the cue for investigation of an otherwise assymptomatic mother.
  • there may be an association with neonatal thrombocytopaenia
  • cyclophosphamide is contraindicated during pregnancy - prednisolone and azathioprine can be used with caution because they have much less teratogenic potential
