Control of ventricular response in atrial flutter

The rate of ventricular response may be controlled by:

  • digoxin
  • beta-blockade
  • verapamil

Amiodarone can be used in refractory atrial flutter.

As a last resort the atrioventricular node can be ablated and a permanent pacemaker inserted.

Note that verapamil and beta-blockers should not be given together because of the risk of severe bradycardia.
