Beta haemolytic streptococci

These are streptococci (round or ovoid gram - positive bacteria) that are characterised by their ability to lyse red blood cells.

These include organisms with the Lancefield group A antigen (S. pyogenes), group B (S. agalactiae, which may result in serious neonatal infections), C and G.
