Antibacterial treatment:

  • combination of rifampicin, isoniazid, ethambutol and streptomycin

Local treatment:

  • splinting of the joint concerned - for example, use an abduction frame for an affected hip in a child
  • surgical aspiration / drainage of abscesses
  • review at four months: - encourage active movements if the articular cartilage is intact - arthrodesis if the articular cartilage is destroyed
  • consider operative replacement if joint destruction severe
