Reserpine is a Rauwolfia derivative, introduced into psychiatry in 1953 but soon replaced by phenothiazines.

It is a potent neuroleptic with strong sedative and anti- psychotic actions, now abandoned because of severe and frequent side effects which include extra-pyramidal syndrome and depression.
