Sulphonylureas are contraindicated in those patients with known sulpha allergy and in pregnant women.

Care should also be taken in patients with renal impairment. Chlorpropamide in contraindicated since 20% is excreted unaltered in the urine whilst tolbutamide, glicazide and glipizide are relatively safe since their hepatic metabolites are inactive and only small quantities are excreted unaltered in the urine.
