When managing diabetes there are two aims:

  • to prevent hypo- and hyperglycaemia and maintain a level of glycaemic control appropriate to the patients age, duration of disease, existing complications, compliance, intelligence and lifestyle on a day to day basis

  • to prevent / treat as necessary the longterm micro and macrovascular complications of diabetes

The treatment of IDDM (type I) and NIDDM (type II) diabetes may involve one or more of:

  • dietary measures
  • therapy with oral hypoglycaemic agents
  • insulin therapy
