Rift Valley fever is caused by infection with a bunyavirus, found in rodents, wild game and domestic animals. Transmission is via infected mosquitos - Culex pipiens was implicated in the Egyptian epidemic of this disease in 1977. Direct contact with the blood of infected animals may also transmit this disease.
