Letterer-Siwe disease is an acute disseminated form of Langerhans cell histiocytosis, occurring most often in children younger than 3 years old.

This condition needs to be distinguished from the clinically similar but exceedingly rare disorder of haemophagocytic reticulosis, which often has a familial incidence.
