Foetal distress may be caused by:

Prolapse of the cord:

  • this is an emergency requiring immediate delivery. If the cervix is fully dilated then forceps should be used; otherwise a caesarian section is indicated

Placental insufficiency:

  • this may be due to hypertension, haemorrhage or postmaturity

Prolonged labour.
