There is a history of antibiotic usage. This condition is most common after treatment with particular antibiotics - lincomycin and clindamycin; ampicillin and amoxycillin; cephalosporins.

In surgical patients, this condition most often occurs post-operatively.

The patient develops a worsening and eventually prostrating diarrhoea. This condition may be fatal, especially in the elderly.

The patient may develop toxic megacolon.

The condition is associated with a high recurrence rate.
