The mental state of a patient may be altered by a variety of abdominal pathologies including:

  • hepatic encephalopathy
  • uraemia encephalopathy
  • electrolyte disorders caused by, for example:
    • diarrhoea
    • bowel fistulae
    • vomiting
    • pancreatitis
  • hypoglycaemia:
    • liver failure
    • insulinoma
