Surgery may be indicated for syringomyelia. It's aims are to promote free flow of CSF through the foramen magnum and therefore prevent dilatation of the syrinx. If there is an Arnold-Chiari malformation, then surgical decompression at the foramen magnum may be attempted.

Surgery may result in relief of pain and prevent progression of symptoms.
