Indirect inguinal hernias recur in about 3% of cases when a recognised operative repair is competently performed. For direct hernias, the figure may be as high as 28%. Risk factors for recurrence include:

  • poor operation
  • inherently poor musculature
  • chronic cough - especially in bronchitics or people who continue to smoke immediately after the operation
  • urinary obstruction
  • constipation
  • premature return to heavy work

Male patients with recurrent hernias may be required to have their testis and spermatic cord removed to avoid future recurrence.
