The objective of the UKPDS-38 trial was to determine whether tight control of blood pressure prevents macrovascular and microvascular complications in patients with type 2 diabetes.

The trial randomly assigned patients to:

  • tight control of blood pressure aiming at <150/85 mmHg
  • less tight control aiming at <180/105 mmHg

The drugs used were ACE inhibitors or beta-blockers.
