Gluteus minimus is the smallest of the gluteal muscles. It is fan-shaped and sits deep to gluteus medius.
It originates from the outer surface of the ilium between the middle (anterior) and inferior gluteal lines. It inserts into the anterior surface of the greater trochanter of the femur. A bursa separates the proximal part of the tendon from the trochanter.
Gluteus minimus is innervated by the superior gluteal nerve (L4, L5, S1) running on its superficial surface.
Its action are shared with gluteus medius.
