The interventricular grooves of the heart are surface depressions on the myocardium which indicate the deeper divisions of the ventricular chambers within the heart due to the interventricular septum.

There are two which are continuous with each other around the apex of the heart at the apical incisure, a point slightly to the right of the true apex:

  • anterior interventricular groove:
    • runs on the sternocostal surface of the heart
    • passes from the coronary groove on the left side of the pulmonary arterial trunk laterally, inferiorly and to the left
  • inferior interventricular groove:
    • runs on the diaphragmatic surface of the heart
    • originates along the atrioventricular border near to the site of insertion of the coronary sinus into the left atrium
