Causes include:

  • maternal systemic lupus erythematosis; usually caused by transfer to the neonate of anti-SSA/Ro or anti-SSR/La antibodies across the placenta in up to 25% of mothers who have SLE
  • transposition of the great arteries
  • after cardiac surgery or damage by infarction
  • rarely, other maternal connective tissue diseases
