Foetal alcohol syndrome occurs in children born to mothers who drink excessively. The risk is based on maternal alcohol consumption during pregnancy, although interaction between alcohol and other factors such as smoking or malnutrition is not clear, especially since discrimination of the influence of factors is difficult.
