A patient's suitability for renal transplantation depends upon:

  • pre-existing disease:
    • from systemic effects of chronic renal failure, such as hypertension - these are more common in older patients
    • other disease - malignancy, pre-existing cardiovascular disease

  • technical feasibility of operation:
    • patients with bladder outflow obstruction may require a transplant into an ileal or colonic conduit
    • arterial anastomosis may be difficult in patients with extensive vascular disease
