Thrombocytopaenia and functional platelet abnormalities result in a bleeding tendency:

  • spontaneous cutaneous purpura or ecchymoses
  • mucous membrane bleeding
  • nose bleeds, especially in children
  • menorrhagia
  • post-partum haemorrhage

Rare complications usually only occur when the platelet count is below 30x10^9::

  • retinal or subconjunctinal haemorrhage
  • gastrointestinal bleeding
  • intracranial bleeding
