The actual findings in a postmature infant are of:

  • dry, flaky skin, with long fingernails
  • the postmature placenta tends to be more gritty with areas of infarction, the relevance of which depends on the degree of placental redundancy - sufficient in most cases to make this functional loss insignificant to the fetus. However this may contribute to the increased perinatal mortality seen in postmature infants.
