Maternal distress may be caused by:

  • a long first stage
  • pre-existing disease in the mother e.g. hypertension, cardiac defects and pulmonary disease

Mental distress results in ineffective voluntary pushes.

Physical distress is characterised by:

  • a rising pulse rate
  • dehydration
  • slight pyrexia
