About 5% of vulvar dystrophies have malignant potential, especially those with cellular atypia on initial biopsy.

Two-thirds of vulval carcinomata are associated with vulvar dystrophies.

Women in countries with a high incidence of the following conditions develop vulval carcinoma at an earlier age:

  • schistosomiasis
  • granuloma inguinale
  • lymphogranuloma venereum
