Precipitants of a thyroid crisis may include:

  • upper respiratory tract infection
  • stress
  • radioiodine treatment
  • recent thyroid or non-thyroid surgery in a patient whose hyperthyroidism has not been adequately controlled or recognised

In other cases, no precipitating factor may be found.
