Treatment involves:

  • administration of oxygen
  • bronchodilators may be indicated
  • i.v. hydrocortisone (100-200mg iv)
  • intubation
  • iv colloid infusions to maintain blood pressure
  • intermittent positive-pressure ventilation: may be required to if respiratory failure ensues
  • bronchial lavage
  • antibiotics only if bacterial infection
