Tuberous sclerosis has an incidence of 5 to 7 per 100 000.

A third of patients exhibit autosomal dominant inheritance with variable penetrance. The remainder of cases are due to new mutations.

The gene for tuberous sclerosis has been localised to chromosome 9.
