Post streptococcal glomerulonephritis characteristically occurs 7 to 14 days after infection with group A beta haemolytic streptococcus, usually after a sore throat. In tropical climates it is more often seen two or three weeks after skin sepsis.

A similar condition can be caused by other bacteria and viruses.
