Assessment of mortality and morbidity attributable to FES is difficult since the condition occurs in association with other serious injuries eg to the head and chest. Accepting these limitations, the overall mortality rate is low (5-15%) provided resuscitation is adequate, and most mortality is a result of respiratory complications. Most of the long term morbidity is associated with cerebral complications especially focal neurological deficits.
