The tricuspid or right atrioventricular valve is situated around the atrioventricular orifice between the right atrium and ventricle.

During right atrial contraction, the valve leaflets are pushed open to permit flow into the right ventricle. During ventricular contraction, the leaflets converge to block passage of blood into the atrium; the contraction of papillary muscles prevents eversion of the valve into the atrium.
