The prognosis is better for secondary hypochondriasis than a primary disorder. The best prognosis is with hypochondriasis associated with depressive illness or brief anxiety neuroses.

If an individual has hypochondriacal personality traits then these are unlikely to change. Primary hypochondriacal neurosis carries a poor prognosis.
