Minor splenomegaly may be caused by:

  • early stages of diseases causing massive and moderate splenomegaly

  • polycythaemia rubra vera

  • essential thrombocythaemia

  • haemolytic anaemia

  • viral infection:
    • infectious mononucleosis
    • viral hepatitis

  • bacterial infection:
    • infective endocarditis
    • miliary tuberculosis

  • connective tissue disorders:
    • rheumatoid arthritis
    • polyarteritis nodosa
    • systemic lupus erythematosus
    • Felty's syndrome

  • infiltrative disorders:
    • amyloidosis
    • sarcoidosis
    • metastatic disease

  • histiocytoses e.g. Letterer-Siwe disease

  • megaloblastic anaemia - rarely
