Investigations

Investigations should include:

  • biochemistry - renal function and blood glucose. The latter is particularly important in children and finger prick measurements should be repeated frequently through the admission.
  • toxicology screen. The history from an individual acutely intoxicated with alcohol is anything but reliable, and knowledge of other toxins may be helpful if there is a clinical deterioration.

Other investigations are indicated by clinical circumstances:

  • CT scan if there is a possibility of head injury
  • blood gases if the patient is in coma
