Exclude other causes of presentation, e.g. myocardial infarction, pericardial effusion. In some cases viral serology may be of assistance.

  • ECG: exclusion of MI; identification of arrhythmias
  • CXR: cardiomegaly, LVF
  • echocardiography: exclusion of pericardial effusion and mitral stenosis
