Uses: mild to moderate pain, control of diarrhoea and for cough suppression Dose by mouth - Adult:

  • 30-60mg 4-hourly up to max 240mg/24 hours for pain
  • 15-30mg as needed for diarrhoea or cough Child: cough suppressants not generally recommended
  • avoid altogether under 1 year

Tablets: 15 mg; 30 mg 60 mg tabs, 25mg/5ml syrup and injections are also made. Codeine Linctus/Diabetic Codeine Linctus 15mg/5ml:

  • 5-10ml 3-4 times/day, child 5-12 yrs 2.5-5ml; 100-200ml
  • a paediatric linctus 3mg/5ml is also made for under-5's
  • can be sold OTC provided max dose does not exceed 5ml
