This is a common condition in which the preseptal fold of the skin and orbicularis muscle cover the pretarsal portion of the lid. It is a natural consequence of aging and results from loss of elasticity of the skin and muscle and from weakening of the orbital septum.
In the upper lid, the preseptal skin and muscle folds over the pretarsal muscle of the lid. Weakness of the orbicularis muscle and septum causes the preaponeurotic fat pad to bulge forwards, accentuating the fullness of the lid. The medial fat pad also becomes visible. When severe, the superior visual field may be obstructed.
Surgery may be performed for visual or cosmetic regions.
