Infantile beriberi

Infantile beriberi occurs in the breast-fed infants of a woman who has low thiamine stores. The usual age of onset is 3 months.

The clinical features are:

  • anorexia
  • oedema
  • tachycardia
  • tachypnoea

There is a fatal outcome unless treatment is initiated rapidly.
