Hyperkalaemic periodic paralysis is an autosomal dominantly inherited disease where there are attacks of paralysis lasting 30 or 40 minutes.

During the attacks the potassium rises, but some patients show weakness at serum potassium concentrations not greater than 4mM.

Attacks may be aborted by IV calcium gluconate.
