In the alternate cover test, the eyes are rapidly and alternately occluded - from one eye to the other and then back again.

This procedure causes breakdown of the binocular fusion mechanism and will reveal refixation movements of each eye at the moment of uncovering.

In the absence of a manifest squint, such a squint in fixation implies a latent squint.
