Probenecid is:

  • a uricosuric drug which increases the urinary excretion of uric acid
  • primarily used in the prophylaxis of acute gout

During treatment with probenecid the patient should ensure adequate fluid intake; in cases of severe hyperuricaemia the urine may be rendered alkaline in order to prevent urolithiasis.
