The inconvenience and worry of a prolonged pregnancy puts pressure on the medical staff to induce labour. This is often because parents do not realise that an estimated date of delivery is just that - an estimate!

Most units do not induce routinely before 42 weeks. Induction at term may be indicated where there is a risk of cephalopelvic disproportion, hypertension or the placenta is failing.

Induction of labour is usually by amniotomy.

The foetus is monitored cardiotocographically. Signs of foetal distress in the first stage of labour are an indication for caesarian section. Distress in the second stage calls for rapid instrumental delivery.
