Suprapubic aspiration of urine is the most accurate method of collecting urine for diagnosis of infection in children less than 2 years of age.
The procedure is safe and relatively simple. Note that it is very important to be able to percuss the bladder before attempting aspiration. It is also useful to put a bag over the external genitalia before starting since the manipulation of aspiration may precipitate voiding.
Contraindications include a bladder which cannot be percussed and the presence of any skin sepsis on the anterior abdominal wall.
In this technique the presence of any organisms on culture is indicative of infection.
