The vertebrocostal triangle is the area between:

  • inferiorly, the 12th rib
  • laterally, the ascending costal part of the diaphragm
  • medially, the lateral arcuate ligament

Normally, it is covered by a connective tissue membrane that divides pleura superiorly from peritoneum inferiorly. If the interposing layer fails to develop, it can develop into the foramen of Bochdalek.
