Sulphasalazine is metabolised by colonic bacteria and azo-reduction to produce sulpha and salicylate moities.

Most sulphapyridine is absorbed, acetylated by the liver, and excreted by the kidneys.

5-ASA is mainly excreted in the faeces after acetylation by colonic epithelium, bacteria, or the liver. Only a small proportion 5-ASA reaches the systemic circulation.
