This condition may arise in two ways:

  • children and young female adults - usually, fibromuscular hyperplasia
  • older adults - usually atherosclerotic stenosis of the renal artery ostium

Renal ischaemia causes secondary hyperaldosteronism, via activation of the renin-angiotensin system, and/or functional renal impairment.
