The commonest causes of malabsorption in developed countries are:

  • mucosal injury secondary to gastroenteritis (post-enteritis syndrome with secondary disaccharide malabsorption).
  • cow's milk protein intolerance
  • giardiasis
  • coeliac disease
  • cystic fibrosis
