Factors which increase the amount of surfactant produced by a foetus or neonate include:

  • prolonged rupture of membranes
  • maternal hypertension and pre-eclampsia
  • steroids given to the mother
  • sickle cell disease in the mother
  • alcohol abuse by the mother
